Paper (P) - DIN Standard 66399

DIN PNG wide

DIN 66399 is now referenced as ISO/IEC 21964

DIN 66399 Material Classification P refers to information presentation in original size, for example paper, films, printing plates. The security levels run from P-1 to P-7 with P-1 being recommended for data carriers with general data, which have to made illegible to P-7 for data carriers with top secret data where the strictest security standards shall be maintained.

P1

  • Recommended for fast throughput
  • 12mm strips or maximum particle surface area of 2,000mm²
  • Shredded data can be reproduced without special knowledge or equipment, although the process is time-consuming

P2

P-2 Blue Circle
  • Recommended for basic security
  • 6mm strips or maximum particle surface area of 800mm²
  • Shredded data can be reproduced with equipment, although the process is time-consuming

P3

P-3 Blue Circle
  • Recommended for sensitive information
  • 2mm strips or maximum particle surface area of 320mm²
  • Shredded data can only be reproduced with maximum effort and special equipment

P4

P-4 Blue Circle
  • Recommended for commercial (HIPAA, FACTA, FISMA, PIPEDA, etc.)
  • Maximum cross-cut particle surface area 160mm² with a maximum strip width of 6mm = 6x25mm
  • Shredded data can only be reproduced utilizing equipment that is not readily available commercially

P5

P-5 Blue Circle
  • Recommended for highly sensitive information
  • Maximum cross-cut particle surface area 30mm² with a maximum strip width of 2mm = 2x15mm
  • Shredded data is unlikely to be reproduced even with special equipment

P6

P-6 Blue Circle
  • Recommended for secret/confidential information – Meets US Army Reg. 380-5
  • Maximum cross-cut particle surface area 10mm² with a maximum strip width of 1mm = 1x10mm
  • Shredded data cannot be reproduced even with special equipment

P7

P-7 Blue Circle
  • Recommended for top secret information; NSA requirement for top secret and classified information; NARA requirement for CUI information
  • Maximum cross-cut particle surface area 5mm² with a maximum strip width of 1mm = 1x5mm
  • Shredded data cannot be reproduced in any way with the current state of science and art
